Model 5621

Dutch Design Week

Model 5621 explores how the newest technology can help residents to vocalise their ideas and become part of the urban development process of their own neighbourhood. This installation was built by Daan Rongen and me especially for the Dutch Design Week of 2020.

Neighbourhoods in transition

Woensel-West, a district in Eindhoven, is undergoing a transition with noticeable effects on the scenery and district layout. This brings an opportunity for novel urban planning to the area.

Opening up the conversation

We believe that involving local residents in this process is a crucial factor in the pursuit of liveability. We aim to kickstart the discussion about future plans for this area by calling on to the childlike fantasy within the local residents, and in particular: children. This platform translates neighbourhood ideas, in the shape of LEGO scale models, into realistic-looking satellite images.

Lego to satellite images

The Lego colours resemble residential areas, water, parks and infrastructure. The webcam analyses the scale model and interprets it using computer vision. This generates a color indexation that our Machine Learning model recognises. The blueprint is ran through a machine learning model that has been trained with 1.000 satellite images from Eindhoven. The platform applies this model to the LEGO blueprint to generate a new realistic-looking satellite image. The result of this process is a satellite image of your ideal neighbourhood.

Jasper Bunschoten

Digital product designer

I help companies and individuals to explore, design and strategise their new products and services. My strength lies in bridging the gap between abstract ideas and tangible concepts.

In my work I always aim to explore how things can be fundamentally different from the ways we already know. Deeply understanding the challenge at hand and searching for inspiration in unusual places are important steps in my creative process. When analysing possible solutions, I always consider the impact on our global society and planet as a whole.

Themes I find important are mental- and physical wellbeing & creating connection between people, society and our natural ecosystem.

Besides my passion for design, I like sports, nature, reading, photography, building stuff with my hands and learning new things.
