Crime Scene VR Training

Dutch National Police

A large part of a detective's work is to manage a crime scene. Since a crime scene is not the best learning environment, the police started exploring the option to train detectives in VR. In the first phase of this project I joined their team to research the challenge, guide the ideation process and work towards a first prototype.

Research

To create a solid understanding of the learning needs and experience of a new detective, I organised several workshops and interviews. Also I observed a real detective team. In a journey map and risk assessment matrix, I summarised all my findings.

Ideation

Using the key insights from the research phase, I organised a (slightly modified) design sprint. During this sprint we worked from insights to storyboarded ideas to a first prototype.

Prototyping

To keep our test light, we stayed away from a VR prototype. To emulate the experience of VR, I sketched out a crime scene on several posters that we would hang on the walls to create a 360 degrees crime scene room. Using red glasses, the participants were able to 'switch' the red text, which contains help from a senior detective, on and off.

Impact

Testing the prototype provided the team with many insights to build on during the next phases of their project. Currently (2023) the VR training is in development and still contains some parts of this first prototype. Besides progressing in the VR project, the organisation was also introduced several user-centred design methods that were new to them. This project currently serves as an example for innovation within the Police organisation.

After our test was completed, the prototype continued to be used by detectives to train their crime scene skills.

Jasper Bunschoten

Digital product designer

I help companies and individuals to explore, design and strategise their new products and services. My strength lies in bridging the gap between abstract ideas and tangible concepts.

In my work I always aim to explore how things can be fundamentally different from the ways we already know. Deeply understanding the challenge at hand and searching for inspiration in unusual places are important steps in my creative process. When analysing possible solutions, I always consider the impact on our global society and planet as a whole.

Themes I find important are mental- and physical wellbeing & creating connection between people, society and our natural ecosystem.

Besides my passion for design, I like sports, nature, reading, photography, building stuff with my hands and learning new things.
